Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative: 

Borneo Backpackers is located on the site of a World War II Australian army camp.

In 1995, this site was recognized by the Sabah Tourism Board and the Australian Embassy as a historical site and is continues to be preserved and promoted by Borneo Backpackers for its historical relevance today.

The walls are adorned with wartime photographs of Australian and British soldiers, local heroes and war memorial plaque replicas. Passersby can also learn about the history of the site by reading two wall plaques outside. The ground floor is home to coffee shop complete with antique furniture. This coffee shop also uses traditional local foods.
